Epic Roadtrip Day 2

In the morning I started my Roadtrip Workout with 15 jumping jacks, 15 squats, twice.  This was my effort to get some good exercise in, keep my blood flowing & my energy levels high to last during the long driving day.  At the end of this post I summarized today’s Roadtrip Workout Circuits.

We left our hotel around 7 am EST & drove along the Mississippi River in search for a gas station.  We had to back track a little bit, & go back to Illinois across the river to get gas.  Then back through Iowa on 80W.

Morning at the Mississippi River

Our official stop was in Davenport.  We stopped to get more gas, let the dog out, for circuit 2 of my Roadtrip Workout, & to get some other necessities.  My Roadtrip Workout Circuit 2 consisted of sprinting to a tree (about 50 meters) followed by 10 uphill burpees (burpees on an incline) & repeating that 5 times.  The lady that worked at the gas station asked what I was training for. I told her “life”…”nothing in particular”.  Since my mom forgot a dog leash, we stopped at Target, where I also picked up a $5 jumprope for future Roadtrip Workouts.

Then we were in pursuit of the Iowa Food Coop, which ended up not really being a food coop how we thought it to be (a local grocery store).  It actually was not a food coop that I was thinking it would be.  It wasn’t a local grocery store offering healthy & regional cuisine.  Rather, it was a pick up spot at the mall…so no healthy fresh local food to be seen.  The food court at the mall did offer up “chicken”, which probably hadn’t been chicken for quite awhile.

Fresh local product at Tomato, Tomato in Omaha, Nebraska

My driving shift was next, so I took the wheel until our next stop in Omaha, Nebraska.  On the way we saw beautiful scenery – corn fields, windmills, barns, & greenery.  I told my mom that we were going to stop at a “destination” in Omaha aka a farmers market (because I love farmers markets).  Before I checked out the market, I did my Roadtrip Workout Circuit 3, busting out my new jump rope for 100 jumps followed by 10 pushups, repeated 5 times.  Then I explored the year round, indoor farmers market, called Tomato, Tomato.

The folks there were really friendly people & the market offered so much to choose from!  It literally is like a grocery store, but all sourced locally.  The items are on consignment, so the farmers don’t have to be there to sell their own goods.  They had fresh fruit, vegetables, meats (ostrich!), eggs, dairy, grains, baking mix, pre made food (like pulled pork, paleo muffins), chips & salsa, pickled asparagus, dog biscuits, granola, dried apple chips, snacks, tea, coffee & beyond!  FYI, they don’t allow you to bring dogs, so leave fido at home.

We later stopped in Kearney, Nebraska & walked downtown with our travel companion, Rosso. We went to Tru Cafe to caffinate & get some snacks. The downtown was prepping for the University students to take over (good thing for business because the couple block stretch was pretty dead).  The highlight of this little town was the movie theater turned dentist office…what a creative idea!  Get oral surgery & invite all your friends to watch it live on the big screen!

At the gas station before we got back on 80W I ran 4 laps around the gas station & in between laps I did 10 pull-ups at the playground, conveniently located right next to the gas station.  Just what I needed!

Driving through Nebraska is beautiful.  The eyes can see so far…fields & fields, with the skyline far in the distance. The sunset was remarkable.  The sun looked a reddish tint with hints of purple & orange.  Against the green & yellow fields it sure stood out.

We stopped in Cheyenne, Wyoming for gas & a quick stretch of the legs. I continued with my Roadtrip Workout Circuit, with 500 jumps with the jump rope (which ended up being the amount I fit in while my mom went to use the restroom. She set the AMRAP!)

After another hour of driving, we ended the day’s drive after 17 total hours…stopping in Laramie, WY for the night.  Before settling down to bed I got in a final Roadtrip Workout Circuit…300 core exercises.  Phew!  Definitely deserve resting up for our final long day of driving tomorrow!

Venture on,
